A rainy afternoon at 7 Stichwort Lane in Ashford. Nine-year-old Jordyn and seven-year-old Tyler are stuck indoors while the raindrops tap against the windows.
Across the world in Fourways, South Africa, the sun was shining brightly. Dad Warren was on a video call with Granddad Richard, who turned his camera to reveal the lush green lawns of Waterfall Kennels and Cattery.
"Since 1959, there hasn't been a day without a wagging tail or a happy purr at this place!" — Granddad Richard
The ginger tabby, quietly grooming his paw — perfectly content, perfectly unexciting.
The black-and-white cat, dozing on a rug without a care in the world.
"I wish Jack and Joey would do something exciting," Tyler sighed.
Suddenly, Tyler had a spark of inspiration. He dashed upstairs and returned clutching four bright red, knitted socks.
"If they can't go out, they can go on an indoor adventure! Let's play Puss in Boots!"
Jordyn giggled and helped Tyler gently slide the red socks over Joey's back paws. Joey stood up, gave his back legs a funny little shake, and took a tentative step.
The red socks slipped on the polished kitchen floor — and Joey went sliding across the room like an ice skater!
"Look at him go!" — Dad Warren
Jack, seeing his brother zoom across the floor in red socks, decided he wanted in on the fun. He batted at the remaining socks until Jordyn slipped them onto his front paws.
Jack immediately began high-stepping around the kitchen like a majestic show horse, lifting his red-socked paws high in the air with every step.
Put her book down to cheer on the impromptu cat parade. "They look like royalty!"
Laughed out loud watching Joey slide across the kitchen floor like an ice skater.
Chuckling so hard through the video call that he had to put his tea down.
"I've seen generations of fancy felines at the cattery, but I've never seen two brave explorers quite as stylish as the Cats in Boots!" — Granddad Richard
Wiping tears of laughter from his eyes, Granddad Richard delivered the ultimate seal of approval — from a man who had seen it all at Waterfall Kennels and Cattery since 1959.
The ginger tabby who became a majestic show horse, high-stepping in red socks with royal flair.
The black-and-white daredevil who turned a polished kitchen floor into his very own ice rink.
On a rainy afternoon in Ashford, two ordinary house cats became legendary adventurers — all it took was four bright red knitted socks and the imagination of a seven-year-old.
"They look like royalty!" — Mum Michaela
