It was a rainy Thursday at 7 Stichwort Lane in Ashford — the perfect day for building indoors. Seven-year-old Tyler had just finished reading a story about a busy little beaver who built a magnificent dam across a rushing forest brook.
"We need to build a dam, too!" Tyler announced, dragging a massive sofa cushion into the middle of the living room.
Inspired by the beaver story, Tyler kicked off construction by hauling the first cushion into position — the spark behind the whole project.
Nine-year-old Jordyn stepped up as chief engineer, fetching two more cushions and a pile of fluffy blankets. The mission: block the hallway so the "river" wouldn't flood the lounge.
Dad Warren held the tablet so Granddad Richard could watch the construction project all the way from Fourways, South Africa — his sunny office at Waterfall Kennels and Cattery.
"Since our family established the kennels in 1959, I've seen plenty of dogs try to dig their own forts in the exercise yards, but I must say, your cushion dam is top-tier work."
Mum Michaela brought in a tray of warm milk and cookies for the hardworking builders, offering one gentle word of caution with a smile:
"Just make sure the local wildlife doesn't tear it down."
Right on cue, the "local wildlife" arrived. Jack, the ginger tabby, and Joey, the black-and-white cat, strolled down the hallway — only to find their usual path completely blocked by a towering wall of pillows and blankets.
Always the daredevil, Joey decided the new structure was a mountain meant for climbing. With a quick wiggle, he leaped to the top of the highest cushion, claiming it as his royal throne and looking down at the children.
Jack had a different idea. He sniffed around the base of the dam until he found a small tunnel Jordyn had made with a draped blanket — then squeezed inside, curled up in the darkest, coziest corner, and immediately started purring loudly.
"Look, Granddad!" Tyler laughed, pointing at the ginger tail sticking out of the tunnel. "Jack thinks he's a beaver in his lodge!"
"And Joey is the king of the dam," Jordyn added — and honestly, it was hard to argue with that assessment.
"Well, that's cats for you! Dogs do all the digging, but cats always find the coziest spot once the work is done!"
Granddad Richard's booming laugh came through the tablet, delighting the whole room — a moment of joy shared across continents, from Ashford all the way to Fourways.
The Great Cushion Dam stood tall that rainy Thursday — engineered by Tyler and Jordyn, admired by Granddad Richard from South Africa, and promptly claimed by Jack and Joey as their own personal fortress and throne.
